Dizzy & Dean

For many years I have had an interest in photos
and various works of art which portray James
Dean. He fascinates me- I think it has something
to do with the sense of remoteness that he conveys-
to me, anyway. Someday, I will tackle and try
to capture him on my drawing pad.
Years ago, I read an article that said that Liz
Sheridan, the actress that played Jerry Seinfeld's
mom on his show, dated James Dean in the early
fifties and was writing an autobiography about their
years together. I couldn't wait. Well, I finally got
my hands on a copy- have not finished it yet,
but will say, it's interesting reading. And, have
found out that Mr. Dean enjoyed playing the recorder,
which is one of my favorite things to do, and has
been since we were instructed to get one in the
seventh grade for chorus. Have yet to see how his
recorder playing pans out- but I know that mine has
been received over the years with mixed reviews.
Some love it, some are pained to hear it.
Will say, it is something I (mercifully) do privately,
for the pure enjoyment of mastering a piece of
music I've set my mind to. And, altho I sing harmony
in the church choir, I've always basically stuck to
the melody on the recorder. Every once in a while,
tho, I'll be playing the melody, while the harmony is
struggling to get out :)
Many thanks to Liz Sheridan, whose nickname is
Dizzy, for sharing this time of her life in her book,
"dizzy & jimmy: My Life with James Dean- a love story,"
with us.
