March

by Ernestine Cobern Beyer

"Ho!" roared March, and his lusty cry
Made all the leaves and papers fly.
The clotheslines leapt at his jovial glance,
And the flannels jigged in a scarecrow dance!

"Hi!" laughed March, and he winked an eye
At a slim young thing who was coming by,
But April fled in her flowery clothes
And slammed spring's door on his bold red nose!

With thanks, again, to Barbara Beyer Malley,
for permission to post her mother's wonderful
work... *K*s always! :D

Thank you for your comment, anon!

And I couldn't agree more- Her daughter Barbara Malley wrote that her mother had been an opera singer who sang with Caruso, and sent me wonderful articles about her amazing life and work.

I became familiar with Ernestine Cobern Beyer when I was eleven years old, and read the enchanting poem, "The Laughing Willow," in a children's magazine (I can still recite it from memory:) That poem dances along with her lyrical words! I had posted the original- but removed it due to a question about the rights- it is ready to be reposted, as soon as I get permission.

A variation of that delightful poem will be included in Ms. Malley's book for children, due in the fall, called "Read Me a Rhyme, Please."

Her work is a gift for children that will touch them forever.

I really don't know why she's not better known. Her work ranks among the giants of children's literature.

I'm always happy to see my mother's whimiscal
rhymes about St. Patrick's Day!
And thank you, Thomas B. for your opinion of her work. I agree!

I forgot to mention that
I liked the way "March" is presented in green letters with "flowery" in a rose
color. Ernestine would smile
and say, "Isn't that lovely!"
